Just for starters, a 2021 report on just fridges shows that the Environmental protection agency estimated around nine million units of refrigerators and freezers are thrown out each year. That is just the U.S alone and this is only just refrigerators, what about the other in-house appliances?
There was a staggering report made in 2014 that laundry equipment made up sixty percent of the 41.8 million tonnes of electronic waste thrown away in 2014. Only sixteen percent made their way into recycling and reusable materials. The amount generated was 7,072-kilo tonnes. We fear it has gotten much worse with the longevity of appliances the past decade alone which tripled in disposable units.
How does repairing appliances help the environment you ask? By repairing appliances we can reuse them or sell them to other people or small companies that sell refurbished appliances. Which is a much better alternative to throwing old parts out of landfills.
If you’re planning to get a new appliance, give your old one away or sell it to someone. If we all do our part we can strive towards a better future for ourselves and our planet.
